Treadmill vs. elliptical

Both train the heart. The better fit depends on movement preference and intended training.

Short answer

Is a treadmill or an elliptical better for a home gym?

A treadmill is better if you want to walk or run; an elliptical is better if low impact matters more than matching your outdoor stride. The treadmill trains the exact motion you use on a road or trail, which makes it the pick for runners and walkers. The elliptical removes the landing impact and moves your legs through a guided path that many people find comfortable, but it doesn't reproduce a normal gait. Either way, check step-up height, machine length and ceiling clearance at full incline, and try the exact model if you can.

01

Training transfer

Treadmills directly support walking and running. Ellipticals create a guided pattern that can be comfortable but does not reproduce normal gait.

02

Space and access

Compare step-up height, machine length, ceiling clearance at maximum incline and safe space behind the deck or pedals.

03

Try the motion

Stride geometry varies. Whenever possible, use the exact model before buying, especially if comfort is the deciding factor.
