Functional trainer vs. all-in-one gym
Cable freedom or maximum equipment density?
Research-ledClearly sourced
Short answer
Should I get a functional trainer or an all-in-one home gym?
Get a functional trainer if cable work is the core of your training and you want quick, simple transitions. Get an all-in-one if you also need a squat rack or Smith machine and they have to share one footprint. A functional trainer's dual pulleys cover a wide exercise library, but they don't give you barbell safeties or a guided Smith bar. An all-in-one saves you separate footprints, though its stations can get in each other's way and the whole frame needs working room around it. Your main lifts, how many people train at once and your ceiling height decide it.
Functional trainers
Dual adjustable pulleys support a wide exercise library and quick transitions. They do not automatically replace barbell safeties or a Smith machine.
All-in-one systems
These combine multiple stations, reducing separate footprints. Check whether components interfere with one another and how much room is needed around the frame.
The deciding questions
Consider primary exercises, number of simultaneous users, cable resistance, ceiling height, bench travel and attachment storage.
